When Winston Churchill was prime minister of England, he made many enemies. One of them was General Jan Smuts. The two men despised each other and had major disagreements. Smuts thought Churchill was a pompous fool who had no vision for the future of England.
Churchill believed Smuts didn’t understand the value of an independent Britain. However, their rivalry became personal when Smuts published his autobiography in which he drew unflattering comparisons between the two men. Not only did Churchill hate the book, but he also hated his own portrayal in it.
In the book, Churchill was portrayed as a man who never rose from his seat at a dinner table to help a lady to her chair. In fact, he left the table rather than helping her get to her seat. In his autobiography, Smuts stated that Churchill had been drunk at that particular dinner and that he had left the table because he didn’t want to be seen helping a woman up a flight of stairs.
